ASPAN National Conference Inspiration

East Tennessee Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses

It has been an honor for several years to be actively involved in an organization that has helped me to grow personally and professionally. The American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) is the National Organization that represents the interests of 55,000 Registered Nurses practicing in preadmission testing, preanesthesia and post anesthesia care, ambulatory and pain management. The Tennessee Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (TSPAN) is our state component of ASPAN. The local district East Tennessee Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ETAPAN) is the grassroots level of the PeriAnesthesia nurses around the Knoxville and East Tennessee area. In April 2011 I was privileged to attend ASPAN’s 30th National Conference in Seattle Washington. The theme of the conference was “Reinvest in your Potential”.

Attending a National Nursing Conference is rewarding and motivating. You are surrounded by more than 2000 professionals just like yourself from around the world. Networking to find new and old friends and partners in the ever-changing health career will show you that it is indeed a very small world.  I am always amazed to find that the challenges I face everyday occur in health care facilities all across the nation. Brainstorming together about current issues sharing evidence based best practices help us to find solutions to meet the needs of our patients.

There was such a wide variety of classes are available to choose from such as Preadmission Testing Challenges and Solutions, Cardiovascular Drugs: Why we give what we give, and “What do I Do First” With the numerous classes available it is  often difficult to narrow down the choices in the time frame allotted for education. In addition to the educational offerings we were treated to the finest inspirational speakers in the country. If you are not actively inspiring yourself then by default you are choosing to let someone else motivate you. This was one of many thoughts shared by a speaker in the ASPAN closing ceremonies. I returned to Tennessee with a renewed mind and a willingness to share the best practices and solutions to challenges we face. I would encourage each of you to attend an educational conference to keep your practice current and inspired.
